Teacher: Mr. Jerry Heal Text: Nelson BC Science Connections
Purpose: Science 9 is a general science course that covers all the major scientific disciplines- life science, physical science and earth/space science. In this course, we will explore a wide variety of topics including:
Processes of Science
Chemistry: Elements, Atoms and Compounds
Live Science: Reproduction
Physical Science: Electricity
We will explore what it means to be scientifically literate. Students will also refine their general literacy skills; meaning we will be doing a great deal of activities related to reading, writing, and organizing information.
Experiential Science Most science educators believe that science needs to be learned in an experiential setting; that is that students need to “do” science, rather than read about science or watch videos, etc. Students will be doing a number of laboratory experiments throughout the year.
Attendance Students who miss classes for any reason will be responsible for making up work outside of regular class time. Students who know about planned absences in advance are advised to find out what the will be missing and to collect any assignments that will be handed out before the planned absence. Students and parents are advised to take steps to avoid absences if at all possible.
Term marks will be composed of the following:
20% Final Unit Assessment (tests or project)
15% Labs and Experiments
15% Communications (Research Presentations and papers)
