Purpose: Science 8 is a general science course that covers all the major scientific disciplines- life science, physical science and earth/space science. In this course, we will explore a wide variety of topics including:
Processes of Science Chemistry: properties of matter, Elements, Atoms and Compounds Live Science: cells and bacteria and viruses , Physical Science: Light, Light transmission We will explore what it means to be scientifically literate. Students will also refine their general literacy skills; meaning we will be doing a great deal of activities related to reading, writing, and organizing information.
Experiential Science Most science educators believe that science needs to be learned in an experiential setting; that is that students need to “do” science, rather than read about science or watch videos, etc. Students will be doing a number of laboratory experiments throughout the year.
Attendance Students who miss classes for any reason are able to follow along with lessons and assessments using the Yukon Moodle Online learning platform at https://yesnet.knowplace.ca/
Term marks will be composed of the following:
20% Final Unit Assessment (tests or project)
15 % Quizzes
20% unit projects
15% Communications (Research Presentations and papers)
